The Duality Featured in Traits of Character

The Duality Featured in Traits of Character

A person's character, or temperament, can be best defined as the combination of their traits. It's best to discover a healthy balance in all that defines our being. I will list some examples of how traits can be used as a positive force in our lives or a destructive force.

Patience is a wonderful trait to possess. It promotes tolerance and understanding and can result in being more mindful or, in rare cases, lead to passivity and acceptance.

In a contrasting view, the infamous trait of Shame can result in self-criticism and stagnation or can be used constructively to prevent one from sinning.

Brazenness, a trait featured in someone unashamed, can result in being strong-willed and unafraid to stand up for values stemming from the purest of motives or, when misused, can lead to the pitiful trait of arrogance.

Striving for perfection can cause one to set high standards and pay attention to detail. However, it can also lead to unrealistic expectations and procrastination.

Honesty is a valued trait for building trust. However, it can lead to bluntness and insensitivity when communicating.

Humility, an admirable trait indeed, can promote a willingness to learn from anyone or result in feelings of inferiority and a lack of confidence.

Flexibility. Being flexible can lead to adaptability and resilience. However, it can also lead to indecision and inconsistency.

Optimism, what can be wrong with being optimistic? Optimism, in its worst form, can result in the denial of negative realities. Optimism in its safest form is hoping for the best while expecting the worst - Preparedness.

Creativity leads to innovation and self-expression or can transform into a lack of practicality.

Being open-minded can lead to creative expression and greater acceptance of diversity. However, it can also result in a lack of commitment to one's values.

Even Anger, the pitiful trait that should 99.9% of the time be on the far end of the spectrum, can be used to wage war against our evil inclinations. The fact that anger has a single use proves that all traits contain duality.

There is not a trait in the world that’s made up free of duality. One would be wise to practice finding the beautiful balance in them all.
